Abertay University's portfolio of credit-bearing short courses builds on its reputation for innovation in education. Our short courses will give you a comprehensive insight into cybersecurity and digital safety.

Courses and start dates 

Each short course is worth 5-credits, is fully funded and delivered 100% online.

The courses available are:

  1. Understanding the Cybersecurity Threat (THIS COURSE IS CURRENTLY FULL)

  2. Digital Safety and Cybersecurity (THIS COURSE IS CURRENTLY FULL)

Please note: Although these courses are running parallel, students can still sign up for both - as it is up to the individual learner how and when they decide to engage with the content and learning materials. Lecturers are more than happy to be flexible to accommodate this.

Who are the courses for?

These courses are for those who are interested in learning the key concepts and practical applications used to ensure cybersecurity and digital safety - for themselves and/or their organisation.

Courses are also suited for individuals (in or out of work) who are looking to upskill or re-skill, small business owners and freelancers, third sector organisations/charities, businesses and organisations looking for training and CPD for their staff, and council and governmental workers/stakeholders.

How is each course delivered?

These courses are delivered 100% online and each course runs over a three week period. During the course, you will have the opportunity to engage with learning materials, brought to you by knowledgeable and experienced lecturers. Each course is expected to take 50 hours to complete, with the flexibility delivered via online learning to suit your work schedule and home commitments.

Understanding the Cybersecurity Threat

Content: 

5 SCQF | Level 9

Explore the importance of cybersecurity in a digital world. This course examines the cyber threat landscape and how organisations can maintain an appropriate level of cybersecurity. You will learn how to apply a risk-based approach to select appropriate methods of securing systems and data. In addition, the course examines organisational responsibilities to comply with GDPR using a 3D immersive learning App with work based scenarios.

Understanding the Cybersecurity Threat will discuss the following topics:

  • Introduction to Cybersecurity 

  • Understanding the Cyber Threat Landscape

  • Managing Cybersecurity using a Risk-based Approach

  • Sociotechnical Approaches to Cybersecurity

  • Understanding Organisational Responsibilities to Comply with GDPR

Digital Safety and Cybersecurity

Content: 

5 SCQF | Level 8

This course will develop your digital safety by teaching you how to stay safe online. A range of contemporary topics have been designed to educate you on cybersecurity threats and how to protect yourself against them. The overall aim of this course is to provide you with knowledge of modern personal, technical, and societal cybersecurity threats and countermeasures to safeguard against them. 

Digital Safety and Cybersecurity will discuss the following topics:

  • Threat Landscape

  • Authentication

  • Secure Communication

  • Personal Information Privacy

  • Malware
