Abertay Sport

Welcome to Abertay Sport

Sport and physical activity at Abertay University is as much a part of University life as attending lectures and tutorials. Although a small University Abertay offers a wide range of clubs from the traditional sports such as Rugby and Football to the more diverse sports such as Triathlon and Dance.

BUCS League titles for Abertay University

Abertay University is celebrating triple sporting success after securing league wins for both netball 1st, men's tennis and badminton in three ‘invincible’ seasons.

The unbeaten Abertay netball team’s latest 64-24 victory against the University of Strathclyde was enough to secure them the British University and College Sport (BUCS) title in their division.

The Dundee-based side, which boasts two Scottish Universities representatives, has now won all seven of its fixtures this year with an enormous +296 goal difference – almost quadruple that of its nearest rivals.

Following their league success, the team is now looking forward to a cup semi-final against the University of Edinburgh on 4 March.

Captain Lauren Wright, an Abertay Sports Development student, said, 'It’s fantastic to see all the hard work we have been putting in pay off.

'We are a competitive club but we also have recreational players and international students on the Erasmus programme who enjoy coming to train with us.'

Meanwhile, the Abertay badminton team also secured their BUCS league title with a win over the University of Edinburgh.

The undefeated side has won eight and drawn one this year with one fixture remaining.

Club captain Matthew Taylor said, 'It’s a competitive league so it’s great to have won.

'I’m confident we can win our remaining match to go unbeaten for the full season.'

The tennis team have now gone undefeated in league for almost two years and with one fixture remaining this does not look like changing anytime soon.

Abertay Sports Development Officer Mikey Devlin said the achievements were a result of the hard work and determination shown by both teams.

He added, 'To win any league without suffering defeat is an incredible success so all of us at Abertay Sport are delighted they have pulled it off.

'Abertay has a strong culture of participation and competition in sport, and achievements like this go a long way to inspiring others to get involved.'

Competitions and Programmes

The majority of clubs compete competitively in the British University and College Sport (BUCS) leagues where they have had much success in recent years. Abertay sport can also offer a diverse range of non-competitive and recreational sport for those looking to enjoy the social side of club life, including student versus staff golf. Many teams also play in local or regional events organised by Scottish Student Sport (SSS) providing plenty of opportunity for all club the members to play an active role. The 2015/16 season was our most successful to date with four BUCS titles, three SSS titles, a number of local league success stories alongside the highest Sports Union membership to date with over 420 students involved in sport at Abertay.

We are equally proud of our Elite Athlete Development Programme, which is dedicated to helping national standard athletes combine their studies with their sporting commitments. The Programme has, in the past, supported athletes competing at the Commonwealth Games and European Championships in addition to helping many achieve national recognition in their sport.
