How can I help on results day?

On results day

Results day can be emotional, and your student may be nervous, but it's important for you to stay calm and reassure them.

Once they have their results, make sure they log into their UCAS Hub account to find out if they've been accepted into either their firm or insurance choice or whether they're in Clearing.

Top tips

Here's some top tips to help you get the most out of results day and the Clearing process:

  • Make sure you’re available on results day to support them.

Things to have handy:

  • UCAS personal ID and Clearing number - they can find their Clearing number on the UCAS Hub welcome page and ‘Your choices’ section.

  • Name of course(s) interested in.

  • They'll need a note of their results and it's also handy to have a note of their National 5 and GCSE results as they can sometimes come up.

  • Pen and paper.

  • Personal statement – they may be asked questions on this.

  • A note of their email address for any offers they might be sent.

Don’t panic if things didn’t go to plan. However, Clearing places can fill quickly so act promptly and encourage your student to speak to their interested university as soon as they know their results.

Ask your student to contact the university

Make sure it’s your student who calls – but be there to support them. If you need to phone on behalf of your child, make sure you're listed as their nominated person in UCAS, otherwise we need to get consent from them.

Ask questions

Make sure they have a list of questions handy that they might want to ask e.g.  about the course they are interested in and the university in general; if there's still accommodation available etc.

If they don’t get the results they expected or need, don't assume that they've lost their place if they haven't achieved all the conditions of their firm or conditional offer. Get your child to contact the university and see if they will accept the results.

Self-release into Clearing

If your child gets better results than expected they can, of course, still go ahead with their original course choice. However, they can also enter Clearing.

They can't formally apply through Clearing whilst holding a place, but if they want to come to Abertay, they should call to see if we can offer them a place. They can then decline their current university by self-releasing into Clearing.

Self-release allows applicants who already hold a place at university to decline this place and release themselves into Clearing. They can do this by using the 'Decline your place' button when signed into UCAS. This option will be available from 5 July.
