Am I eligible to graduate?

Check the list at the top of this page to see if you are eligible to graduate.

Do I need to register for Graduation?

Yes, you need to register, even if you want to graduate at the next ceremony or 'in absentia' (which means you graduate without attending a ceremony).

What if I forget to register to graduate?

You won't be able to graduate at the next ceremony (e.g.: July). You'll need to wait until the following one (e.g.: in this case, November).

When will I know my degree award?

You'll be emailed your degree award after the Programme Assessment Board have made their decision.

If you're eligible to graduate, an electronic version of your degree certificate will be available in Gradintel. You'll find it there after the Programme Assessment Board decisions are released.

Check your Higher Education Achievement Report (HEAR) and you'll see your degree certificate there.

Am I on the Graduation List?

Once you have registered and successfully passed your degree, you'll be included on the Graduation list.

When does Graduation registration open?

Registration for Summer Graduation normally opens in the springtime.

Registration for Winter Graduation opens about six weeks before the ceremony, which is normally in November.

Depending on when you're graduating, you'll be emailed the details as soon as registration opens.

How do I register for Graduation?

You register to graduate using OASIS.  You'll be emailed all the details, and the next graduation ceremony date.

What if you don't register to graduate? You won't be able to graduate at the nearest ceremony. You'll need to wait until the one after that.

Can I make changes to my registration details?

If you need to make any changes to your details after you’ve registered, please contact graduationevents@abertay.ac.uk  and make sure you include your student number.

Can I defer my Graduation?

Yes, you can defer your graduation once, until the next ceremony. But you can’t claim your degree award until you formally graduate. You can only defer once.

If you want to defer, you still need to complete the registration process so we can keep you informed about the arrangements for the next Graduation ceremony.

What does ‘graduating in absentia’ mean?

It means you graduate, but do not attend a ceremony. Your degree is awarded without you being physically present, and your certificate is sent to you by post.

Can I graduate ‘in absentia’ and then attend a later ceremony in person?

No. You can only be awarded your degree once, whether you are there in person or not.

This means you can't be awarded your degree in absentia and then attend another graduation ceremony. Sorry to say, your graduation can only happen once!

If I graduate 'in absentia', when will I receive my certificate?

If you've registered to graduate in absentia, we post out hard copy degree certificates after the ceremony.

When you get it depends on where you are and the postal service. It's best to allow four to six weeks from the date of graduation ceremony to receive it.

Can I get an official invitation to graduation for Visa purposes?

If you are eligible to graduate at the next ceremony, and we have set up your ceremony record, you'll find an official ‘Awaiting Graduation’ letter in OASIS.

This is an official University letter that can be downloaded and used for visa and travel purposes.

I can't graduate because I owe the University money. How do I pay it?

If you owe the University money for any reason - such as tuition fees or library fines - you might not get to graduate and may not receive your degree certificate. Please pay any money owing as quickly as possible, and definitely before the middle of June.

Any tuition debt will show on your statement in OASIS and you pay online through your OASIS account.

Contact finance@abertay.ac.uk if you have a query on the outstanding balance.

For library fines or overdue books, contact sez@abertay.ac.uk to arrange payment.

How do I make an Academic Appeal?

An academic appeal is a request for a student progression or award decision to be reviewed.

If you are considering making an appeal, please ask for advice from your Faculty Academic Advisor or Faculty Research Degree representative first of all. If you have already graduated, you can't make an academic appeal.

Because you can't appeal after graduation, we strongly recommend that you get advice about whether to appeal before graduating.

You can find guidance on the academic appeals process and a copy of the academic appeals form here.

You can't appeal against a degree classification, grade point average, or the award (or not) of merit or distinction, except in cases where there is evidence of an error in recording grades or in the calculation of the GPA.
