Real-time VFX - also known as ‘real time VFX’, and ‘game VFX’ - are all the same. They are the effects we experience in a video game, but are not just limited to gaming. Real-time VFX are being used across film, TV, eSports, advertising and live immersive events. Working this way cuts out a lot of pre- and post- production, saving time, resources and solving problems on set such as lighting and In Camera Visual Effects (ICVFX).

You'll study using the tools, workflows and expectations of modern, real-time studios. Which gives you a valuable head start, as you'll graduate knowing how to use the same professional tools you'll rely on throughout your career
This means working with software like Houdini, which is widely used to develop VFX and 3D animation. (We are Scotland’s first Houdini Certified School Partner.)
Alongside this, you’ll work with game engines like Unity, and learn to build projects for various platforms, from PC to games consoles to Mixed Reality. We're also Scotland's first Adobe Creative Campus.
You'll use PlayStation development tools in a dedicated PS5 lab, because Abertay is a founding partner in Sony’s PlayStation First academic programme. From Year 2 you’ll start to build audio-visual-haptic immersive experiences on console hardware.

A mixed assessment strategy is used on the course. Most modules are assessed through coursework, which may include project work and student-led presentations.
You’ll spend around 12-15 hours per week in lectures, tutorials and laboratories, and are expected to spend the rest of your time in self-directed study.
Lectures are used to present key concepts, theories and techniques. Tutorials and laboratory-based activities increase your understanding of the subject and allow you to develop your competence and confidence in technological and theoretical work.
Throughout your degree, you’ll be required to actively participate in group work, discussions, seminars, and private study.
In Year 3, for example, you’ll take part in a large-scale Professional Project, working in a mixed team of programmers, artists and designers on a live-style brief in a simulated studio environment.

This module provides a practical introduction to modern game development – introducing students to game engines used widely in the industry today. This module provides an introduction to the principles of 3D graphics programming. Students will develop an application that demonstrates real-time 3D graphics techniques. The aims of this module are to introduce the concept of polygon based rendering, the basics of graphics APIs, and consolidate knowledge of vector/matrix algebra with programming skills.
An introduction to the standard data structures and algorithms that form the core of algorithmic thought in computer science. This module familiarises students with the idea of reasoning about the behaviour and performance of a computer programme. Game Programming and System Architectures Builds on earlier modules and introduces the necessary components to develop a 3D physics-based game application considering the hardware. Learn to integrate various components (3D graphics, physics, audio) and to develop a 3D game application that makes effective use of modern computer/console systems.
This module introduces students to the foundations of visual, film, and critical literacy essential for VFX, games, and film production. This module develops a practical understanding of visual design, builds an appreciation of cinematic language and visual storytelling techniques, and introduces students to ways of critically interpreting visual culture. Framed around the requirements of VFX production, students will create pre-production artefacts that demonstrate their grasp of design principles, cinematic language, and the cultural contexts of screen media
This module examines contemporary audio practices used in the context of interactive digital media and games. Throughout the semester, methods and implementation techniques for a wide a range of applications will be explored, such as games, audio enabled apps for mobile devices, new instruments for musical expression, web audio applications, sonic art and AR/VR audio. The aim of this module is to provide the students with a concrete understanding of the basic principles behind dynamic audio system design, implementation and deployment in different contexts, as well as introduce basic concepts the physics of sound, synthesis techniques and algorithmic music.
An introduction to essential graphics concepts and techniques and a foundation of shader development for real-time graphics. The aim of this module is to provide the student with the ability to understand, develop and critically evaluate shader work for real-time visual effects in a 3D scene.
This module involves delivering a team-based development project or other technical investigation project. The nature of the project will be relevant to the programme studied by the student. The aim of this module is to provide the student with: the opportunity to present and develop a product or technical solution by applying design, development and evaluation principles in a team environment; the ability to operate professionally as a subject specialist within a team and in interaction with project stakeholders.
An introduction to the essential procedural methods of content creation and visual effects animation (VFX), as employed in film, television, games, and virtual production environments. This module aims to provide the student with the ability to design, develop and critically evaluate procedurally generated content and visual effects animation (VFX), which can be employed within film, television, games, and virtual production projects.
Through a series of practical sessions and recorded Q&A with industry professionals, students will be exposed to the expectations of professional games programmers. Practical sessions will model elements of job interviews and developing an appealing portfolio for entry-level positions in industry. The aim of this module is to prepare students for navigating the professional environment of games programming. This will include identifying gaps in their core skills and practicing interview and job assessment techniques. Students will outline a plan for professional development in line with their career aspirations.
An introduction to the theory and practice of digital audio and music for games programming students. The aim of this module is to provide the student with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills required to implement audio facilities as a games developer, and to work with audio professionals as part of a development team.
This module provides the student with the opportunity to undertake the practical and development work for a major, in-depth individual project in an aspect of their programme. Normally the idea for project will be devised by the student and development work will be undertaken during this module. During term 1 proof of concept development will be undertaken to support the specification of a well-researched project proposal document. During term 2 the main development work for the project will be undertaken and completed.
This module provides the student with the opportunity to present as a dissertation a major, in-depth individual project in an aspect of their programme. Normally the project will be devised by the student and should be drawn from current industry and/or research-based problem areas. The production of the dissertation involves the student in presenting the work undertaken in a structured and coherent manner which allows for critical and insightful review and evaluation of the project and artefact produced. The dissertation will be written in academic style appropriate to the domain of study. The aim of this module is to provide the student with: the opportunity to document a major piece of development work as a dissertation and to develop and exercise presentation skills and skills in critical evaluation appropriate to the specific field of study.

As well as Abertay scholarships for English, Welsh, Northern Irish and international students, there are a range of corporate and philanthropic scholarships available. Some are course specific, many are not. There are some listed below or you can visit the Undergraduate scholarship pages.
Up to £4,000 over 4 years for prospective undergraduate games, computing and cybersecurity students applying from England, Wales or Northern Ireland.
A scholarship of £1,500, open to students entering Year 4 of one of the selected Games degrees. This includes a work placement at Ninja Kiwi.
Three £1,000 scholarships for full-time students studying in Year 4 of one of the specified undergraduate degrees.
Two £1,000 awards for students who have overcome challenges to attend university.
A £1,000 scholarship given to two community-minded students entering third year of their undergraduate degree, one from each University faculty.

We're keen to offer help to Ukrainian students who may wish to transfer from their existing institution in Ukraine or to register with us as new students for intake in September. There will be no tuition fees charged for the duration of the degree programme, as those with refugee status are treated as ‘Home/Scottish’ students and will also have access to the Student Awards Agency for Scotland bursary and student loans.
