Course Overview

The University Preparation Programme is a free, week-long course that's specially designed to help you prepare and build confidence before joining Year 1 of an undergraduate degree course.

Studying at university is a fantastic yet challenging experience.

This free programme is designed to help you get the most from your time at Abertay by preparing you for the demands of your degree course. It'll help you familiarise yourself with the university by meeting academics, librarians, and the academic skills tutors, who can help and advise with all aspects of your studies.

You'll have a chance to get to know both the city of Dundee and, of course, other new students. The programme puts you in the best possible position to start your studies.

Entry Requirements

The UP Programme is intended for students joining an undergraduate course, usually starting at Year 1. You can apply if you have been made a conditional or an unconditional offer.

Registration for the 2019 programme will open in May.

Who Is the UP Programme For?

The UP Programme is for:

  • Students going into Year 1 at Abertay in September, who want to be well prepared
  • Students who are a bit nervous about starting university, and want a confidence boost

The UP Programme is designed to help all new students settle in to university life, but especially:

  • School leavers who have struggled to meet their potential because of personal circumstances
  • School leavers who are worried that their Higher grades will not prepare them to succeed on a university course
  • Anyone returning to education after a long time because they have been working or raising a family

Learning

The programme covers a whole range of subjects, from how to write coursework and use the library, to managing your money and who to ask for help.

Topics include:

  • Understanding, planning and researching assignments
  • Referencing, avoiding plagiarism and writing in an academic style
  • Creating an academic poster
  • Giving an academic presentation
  • Becoming an independent learner and a critical thinker

You'll have plenty of opportunities to practice these skills, get feedback from our tutors, and to ask questions. At the end of the programme, you'll know exactly what your lecturers will expect of you, and how to meet those expectations.

Assessment

There are no tests, but we do set a writing task. If you choose to do this, you’ll get feedback on your academic writing which will give you some ideas about what you can already do well, what you might want to work on, and ways to do that.
