Next Gen Stories: How Games can become the 21st Century’s dominant storytelling form

Sam Barlow is an award-winning game designer who has been making games since 1999. He is best known for his innovative and ground-breaking work in the field of interactive storytelling. His games are characterized by their unique narrative structures, deep characters, and immersive gameplay.

Barlow began his games industry career as a writer and designer for Climax Studios where he led the design of Silent Hill Origins and 2009’s critically acclaimed Silent Hill: Shattered Memories. He later solo-developed and released Her Story, which won three BAFTAs and was broadly praised for its innovative use of live-action video. In 2017 he founded Half Mermaid productions in Brooklyn, New York, an independent game studio focused on challenging how game mechanics are utilized to tell stories, and on the values of Community, Innovation, Integrity and Inclusivity. Their most recent game ‘Immortality’ is BAFTA-nominated and is one of only 24 games to have received a 10/10 review score from Edge Magazine.
