Led by Professor Mohamed Branine, an eminent academic authority in the field of International HRM, this CIPD-accredited programme is focused on contemporary practice ensuring you’ll develop the knowledge, understanding and skills you will need to deal effectively, systematically and creatively with the issues and problems of people management that organisations face.

Covering a wide range of HRM strategies, policies and procedures that organisations need to manage their employees in a global context, you will also develop an understanding of the differences between HRM practices and employment systems of varying countries and multinational companies, and how they are influenced by economic, political and social factors.

Throughout the programme, you will benefit from exposure to industry through live business simulations, working on real-life problems set by Abertay University’s business partners.

You will take part in workshops and activities, and share experiences with peers from different countries and organisations, to broaden your knowledge and develop your professional and strategic thinking skills.  Our approach to teaching and learning means you’ll have the opportunity to gain a degree and a portfolio of professional practice skills and experience to present to future employers.


The ability to deal with and respond effectively to the needs of a diverse workforce, provide equal opportunities and develop core competencies in people management is central to the effective management of human resources in today’s international organisations.

The blend of knowledge, analytical and practical skills you will gain will enable you to make decisions and advise senior managers on how to recognise and respond to a wide range of stakeholder influences on business and HR strategies to improve organisational and individual performance.  You’ll also develop your ability to supply accurate and timely advice about legislation in the area of HRM, especially in employee relations’ issues.  This course offers you an opportunity to study and be able to implement HRM policies and practices that take into account influences from different stakeholders and institutional forces relevant to dealing with people’s contributions and rewards within organisations in a global context.

What you study

The course aims to develop your knowledge and understanding of contemporary HRM as a strategic management function, develop a critical understanding of the complexities of managing employment relationships in the contemporary environment and develop the skills and knowledge that add value to organisations while offering the opportunity to study, learn and develop intellectual abilities in a multicultural and stimulating academic environment.

Contemporary HRM The development of a theoretical, practical and comparative framework for understanding the nature of contemporary HRM in a global context. An evaluation of contemporary Employee Relations and managing the employment relationship in complex settings.  To develop a broad understanding of the determining characteristics of national and international HRM systems. 
Organisational behaviour An exploration of the behaviour of humans as individuals, groups and in work organisations as well as of different social science perspectives on the management of human resources.  The development of critical insights into the strategic management process and contemporary issues and cases in strategic management.  The causes and triggers of change, and the levels and complexities of managing and leading organisational change. 
Performance Management A theorectical informed framework for understanding the range of performance management strategies involved in the effective management of people, to develop understanding and enhance critical awareness of contemporary perspectives on the effective management and development of human capital. 

Entry routes

Minimum requirements

UK students should have a good honours degree in a relevant subject area. Non-UK students should have GPA equivalent credentials (e.g. GPA = 3.6).

Applicants should provide 2 references indicating aptitude for study

Overseas Applicants

A minimum proficiency level of IELTS 6.5 (with no band less than 5.5) or equivalent (CEFR: C1) is required. Other certificates and evidence of English proficiency equivalent to IELTS 6.5 can be accepted, details of acceptable qualifications can be found here.  If you do not meet the English language requirements, you may be eligible for our Intensive English for Academic Purposes programme.

Accreditation of prior learning
Applicants with professional and practice based qualifications or work place development programmes may qualify for entry with advanced standing. Please discuss all types of qualifications with the admissions or programme tutor.

Fee quoted is the total cost providing that the MSc follows on immediately after the PG Dip element and is completed within the same academic year as started.  Fees may be subject to increase.

The flexible nature of this programme means that you can study full-time or part-time, commencing in January or September.  

The course can also be used as continuing professional development by studying for intermediate awards of Postgraduate Certificate or Postgraduate Diploma to suit your personal circumstances.
