Many courses offer built-in work placements, mentoring, industry experience, or all three. This means you get relevant work experience, take part in real work projects, develop your professional skills, and network while getting a degree.
Work placements help you gain knowledge of the practical aspects of your subject, and learn how to put theory into practice. Placements help you become more aware of the variety of opportunities within your chosen field.
This experience, along with any volunteering work you choose to do, enhances your CV for the future.
Most of our undergraduate degrees have either a placement module or work-based learning experience. Some are built into the course, some are options.
This enables you to get a taste of working in your chosen subject area and gain credits at the same time.

Internships are a fixed period of work experience, offered for a fixed timescale such as a month or a year. You'll usually work over the summer (typically between year three-four) or after graduation. You will often get paid as well.
Being an intern helps you develop relevant skills in your chosen industry and can provide a useful network of contacts.
Many organisations start advertising their internship opportunities at the start of the academic year, September–December. So if you're in year three or four, begin your search early.
Visit the Abertay Careers Centre to find out more about internships.
Many large organisations operate graduate work schemes which offer a structured training programme. They typically last between one-two years and quite often lead to a job in the organisation on completion.
Graduate scheme applications usually open September–December, so if you’re in your final year, it pays to begin looking at the start.
Visit the Abertay Careers Centre to find out more about graduate schemes.
Bell Street Ventures can help you start a business, learn about contracting or choose your freelance partners. We don't mind if you want to make a million, or make a living – they work with enterprising Abertay students and recent graduates to make it happen.
