This programme is open to applications from college graduates who will have completed their HND in Accounting and would like to study in the evenings. It’ll run from the Abertay University Campus on Bell Street, Dundee and will be taught by academics from both Abertay University and Dundee & Angus College.

Entry Requirements

If you’re on track to complete your HND in Accounting with a minimum of Bs in units 2 & 3, or you have 2 year’s post HND work experience which is relevant to the profession, you’re eligible to apply for this programme.

Key Modules

Advanced Management Accounting (ANF304)

The use of management accounting for management control and advanced numerical techniques in decision-making. Learn to use the most suitable analytical tools to assist in various decision situations. Module content: Control; Decision Analysis; Strategic Management Accounting Techniques.

International Financial Accounting (ANF303)

The application of financial accounting theory and practice to current issues in accounting, and the development of international financial accounting theory and practice. Module content: Statements of cash flows IAS7; Accounting for Groups; Accounting treatments under IAS and IFRS.

Taxation (ANF302)

Introduction to the main principles of taxes on corporate bodies, capital taxes as they apply to individuals and corporations and the main principles of taxation of income of individuals and unincorporated businesses. Provides students with an advanced understanding of the UK taxation system. Module content: Taxation; Trading Income; Taxation of the Individual; Value Added Tax; Corporation Tax and Corporate groups; Management of Personal Taxation; Tax planning and Overseas Taxation.

Financial Markets (ANF305)

Introduction to financial markets and institutions. Provides an understanding of the role, functions and tools of the financial services industry in the context of both domestic economies and the world economy and international trade. Module content: Money and the Financial System; Bond Markets and Interests Rates; Stock Markets; Derivative Markets; Financial Institutions; Other Issues; Central Banking and Monetary Policy; Foreign Exchange; Current Topics on Financial Markets and Institutions.

Corporate Finance (ANF301)

Introduction to corporate finance that provides students with an understanding of the main sources of corporate finance and the ability to apply key techniques for using and managing financing in large and small organisations. Module content: Risk and Uncertainty; Portfolio Theory and Capital Asset Pricing Model; Stock Market Efficiency; Share price Valuation and the Cost of Capital; Sources and cost of Funds; Capital structure and Dividend Policies; Capital Investment Decisions and Investment Appraisal.

Auditing (ANF306)

Introduction to audit theory and techniques and their application to practical situations. Module content: Audit theory; Legal and professional considerations; Current issues such as the auditor's responsibility for discovering fraud and error; Risk based auditing such as business risk and its impact on audit risk; Audit objectives such as testing controls; The audit process; Reporting.

How the Course Works

Learning and Assessment

Our Accounting and Finance degree is a professionally accredited programme, which means there’s a strong reliance on exams as assessment. However, you’ll be well prepared for these with lots of examples practiced in class in advance. 

We also use other assessment techniques, ranging from presentations and online discussions to finding solutions to industry posed questions.

Additionally, you’ll take part in team working to help develop your collaborative skills, as well as presentations, written assessments and online discussions to enhance your communication skills.

On completing your HND in 2 years, it may be that you’re eligible to receive a 3rd year of funding from the Student Awards Agency For Scotland (SAAS) to cover your tuition fees for this programme.

Abertay rUK Scholarship

This is a £9,200 award for prospective undergraduate students applying from England, Wales or Northern Ireland.

Abertay International Scholarship

This is an award of up to £12,000 for prospective international undergraduate students.

The Robert Reid Bursary

Two £1,000 awards for students who have overcome challenges to attend university.
