James Angus Pow

Abertay is already one of the most successful and pre-eminent modern universities in the UK and holds notable high global and national positions in specialized fields pioneering tech-driven degrees.

It has set out its ambitious plans to improve dramatically further by 2030, delivering powerful solutions to global challenges.

Abertay is a small specialist institution, uniquely positioned to carve out a niche from its existing reputation, recognising how its strategy for 2025-2030 sets out a bold vision: to be financially stable with significant growth in non-Scottish Funding Council income, transforming its operations through technology, and strengthening its international reputation.

Drawing upon its distinctive portfolio and industry integration. Abertay is a leader in enabling access and preparing students for work.

The higher education environment internationally and pertinently the UK is undergoing its most turbulent period since the introduction of tuition fees.

These challenges are with us now and on the foreseeable horizon as pressure on government finances will mean that Abertay will require forensic focus on generating its own resources.

As markets change inevitably competition increases for our students and staff.

Not dissimilarly to the global geopolitical issues facing the UK and the world, with ongoing wars, climate change and funding shortfalls harnessing economic hardships worldwide- the emergence and exponential change that Ai will bring to our education establishments is immense.

All of the above will merit significant consideration in order to deliver a transitional transformation to the lives and future careers of the students and staff alike at Abertay.

I firmly believe our size, affirmed purpose, determined commitment to our strongly held values within our inclusive community will ensure Abertay’s ongoing success.

The student experience, the staff and our financial sustainability are core priorities to deliver the very best environment setting the stage for Abertay’s future.

I also think it’s very important that everyone understands what Court does.

My target would be to have more awareness of what Court is doing, giving Court members the time to hear from both students and staff.

Reflecting my own stated core values of open, fair, independent and effective.

The chair of the court has a critical role to play ensuring that every part of the university community are both heard with decision-making, and importantly listened to in setting the strategy and delivering those policies required to mitigate risk and navigate with conviction Abertay’s future.

Whilst still operational in the private sector I have latterly focused my attention in the Third Sector acting as Chair to organisations where my previous Executive Chair and CEO experience within commercial businesses has brought an authoritative, collegiate approach to their leadership at all levels.

I strongly believe that I am aligned personally with your university in delivering the highest quality customer service as demanded today in no less than an anticipated, well communicated timeframe to ensure that it meets the expectations of individuals.

You have my credentials. You have my commitment. Respectfully I seek your support.

Thank you.
