Escape Rex Manor and Accused Witches of Scotland Synopsis

Making the narrative design was basically creating the structure and gameplay for Accused Witches of Scotland, because we were making an AR experience that was storybased and we didn't want to trivialize the subject matter by adding "achievements" and gamifying the very real experience Grissel and other women went through as they were persecuted and then executed.

For Escape Rex Manor, our team combined two genres of games into Escape Rex Manor. Our goal was to combine a narrative-based puzzle exploration game with classic card mechanics and inject a strong comedic horror tone, and that was based off the initial game idea I came up with. Throughout the semester I worked with two other designers through many design challenges and the three of us were able to address all the problems that was impending on the best game experience possible. Puzzle card exploration adventure games are hard to design, but really fun!

Courtney Spivey Project

Motivation

They were both school projects that I was assigned a team to, but ultimately I strived to go above and beyond in all my roles. For AWS I was really inspired I was creating a game that was linked to the history of Scotland, especially the witch trials which are surrounded by stereotype and superstition. I wanted to make sure our game was as historically accurate and appropriate as possible, so that motivated me to create a narrative that encapsulated all of that. For Escape Rex Manor I wanted to create something fun and whimsical, and even though the game is simple to play, I wanted to make something hard for the design team because we wanted a challenge. Balancing and creating the level and cards and interactions were all for that goal as well. Overall, both projects had different motivations, but they are both projects that I dedicated 110% to.
