Improving Traffic Flow using Artificial Intelligence

“Improving Traffic Flow using Artificial Intelligence” is a 2021 Digital Graduate Show project by Nikolaos Poritiadis, a Computing student at Abertay University.

Synopsis

Part of Dundee’s Seagate road was used as inspiration to create a simulation within the Unity game engine. The simulation includes vehicles that move randomly through the road network, the road itself and traffic lights that control the traffic flow through the streets.

Using this as a test environment, various Artificial Intelligence algorithms were used to control the traffic lights. The algorithm outcomes were compared against each other and against conventional methods of traffic light control to ascertain which solution provided better vehicle flow through the road network and which is commercially viable.
