The Theory and Pipeline of Hard-Surface Modelling in Games Design

My project aims to show the creation process of hard-surface (non-organic) assets in video games. I will do this by producing a project write-up, which will explain the whole project chronologically and illustrate the pipeline of those selected created assets, explaining how the theory of hard-surface modelling has been used throughout. I will also be producing an interactive project (walkable environment), where the user can navigate and interact with created proposed objects. When interacting with these objects, the player will be able to read about what the object is and what method - within the creative pipeline - said object undertook.

The Theory and Pipeline of Hard-Surface Modelling in Games Design

This project aims to revaluate and breakdown the methods used to create assets in video games. Especially those that fall into the hard-surface pipeline.

'The Theory and Pipeline of Hard-Surface Modelling in Games Design' is a 2023 Digital Graduate Show project by Adam White, a Games Design and Production student at Abertay University.

Project Motivation

I took inspiration from the video game Elite Dangerous - a flight simulation game where the player takes on the role of a spaceship pilot and explores a realistic galaxy. Hard-surface modelling is prevalent throughout this game, which lead to the development of my project: aiming to show the creation process of hard-surface assets in video games.
