Award on successful completion: Bachelor of Laws (Honours) with Criminology

Composition of the programme: 120 SCQF (Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework) credits in each academic year, delivered in modules of 20 credits each, with 3 modules taken in term 1, and 3 in term 2 each year. In years 3 and 4, modules in Criminology are taken along with accredited Law modules. A 40 credit independent dissertation is included in the final year. There also is the opportunity to undertake a work placement in the final year.
Contact hours and workload: Each academic year typically requires 1200 hours of student effort; on average across the 4 years of this programme, 24% of that time is in lectures, seminars and similar activities; the remainder is independent study.
Assessment methods: A variety of assessment methods are used, which include exams, class tests, coursework, presentations, mooting, and a range of practical oral and written assessments which develop students’ ability to present sophisticated arguments and complex information. Examinations or class tests feature in the majority of accredited subjects in Years 1-3.

Developments in the discipline: The LLB (Hons) with Criminology degree is accredited by the Law Society of Scotland who may, from time to time, review core content of this degree. The core modules listed above comply with the current requirements (August 2022) of these professional bodies. The Faculty of Advocates also accredits core modules but will require entrants to pass further subjects when seeking admittance to Faculty.
