Abertay University’s MySuccess modules receive national teaching excellence award

Team behind the microcredentials recognised with Collaborative Award for Teaching Excellence (CATE)

The MySuccess Modules at Abertay University designed to support students' successful transition to their degree programmes have been recognised with a prestigious award from Advance HE.

The University’s MySuccess modules received the Collaborative Award for Teaching Excellence (CATE), which recognises and rewards collaborative work that has a demonstrable impact on teaching and learning in higher education.

Led by Jack Hogan, Lecturer in Academic Practice, and Dr Julie Blackwell Young, Head of Teaching Quality and Learning Enhancement (AbLE Academy), the MySuccess modules are a series of credit-bearing microcredentials aimed at helping new students thrive academically and personally.

All new students begin with ABE101 – Being Successful at Abertay, an online module that introduces key academic skills, promotes positive student habits, and familiarises learners with university systems and support services.

Students then select three additional microcredentials from a diverse range of topics, including academic writing, research skills, digital skills, wellbeing, and career planning. The modules aim to empower students to personalise their learning and build confidence in areas that matter most to them.

This "whole-university approach" is a collaborative effort involving academic staff, professional services, students, and the Abertay Students’ Association, creating a rich, supportive learning environment.

Since its launch, over 2,700 students have engaged with the modules, boasting an average pass rate of 96.9%.

 Jack Hogan commented:

We are incredibly proud to receive this national recognition for the MySuccess modules. This award reflects the dedication, creativity, and collaboration of colleagues across the University and Students’ Association who work together to support student success. By working collaboratively across disciplines and services, we have created a programme that not only enhances the student experience but also helps shape how we support transitions into higher education. The positive feedback from students has been overwhelming, and it’s rewarding to see these modules boost confidence, foster a sense of belonging, and improve academic achievement at Abertay.

Abertay was among 17 teams from universities across the UK to receive the CATE. Awarded annually by Advance HE since 2016, the CATE celebrates collaborative initiatives that have a significant impact on teaching and learning, emphasising the role of teamwork in UK higher education.

Kathryn Harrison-Graves, Deputy Chief Executive at Advance HE said:

We are delighted to announce the 2025 awards to those with an unwavering commitment to teaching excellence. These CATE teams represent the very best of UK higher education, demonstrating remarkable innovation, dedication and impact on student learning. Their achievements not only benefit their own institutions but inspire excellence across the entire sector. At a time when higher education faces unprecedented challenges, these awards celebrate the transformative power of outstanding teaching and collaboration.

The awards will be formally presented at the CATE 2025 Awards ceremony on Thursday 25 September 2025, in Bristol.
