Abertay University Masters students present innovative projects in games, AI, cybersecurity and VFX

Postgraduate showcase held at the Abertay cyberQuarter offers glimpse into the future of digital innovation

Abertay University recently celebrated the achievements of its MSc graduates with a showcase highlighting the talents emerging from four of its tech-focused postgraduate programmes.

Held at the Abertay cyberQuarter on Wednesday 27 August, the event brought together students from MSc Computer Games Technology, MSc Artificial Intelligence & User Experience, MSc Ethical Hacking and Cybersecurity, and MSc Technical Art and Visual Effects.

Attendees had the opportunity to explore a wide array of graduate projects, ranging from immersive VFX sequences and innovative game mechanics to AI-driven user experiences and cybersecurity solutions.

Among the standout work were explorations into the previsualisation pipeline for virtual production, the use of video games as tools for data annotation education and evaluation, and advanced volumetric rendering of particle systems using interval shading.

Other projects included an AI-driven system for detecting fake profiles on online dating platforms using reverse image lookup and text-based analysis, and a lightweight cyber-threat intelligence dashboard designed for SMEs.

Morgan Skillicorn, a student on the MSc Technical Art and Visual Effects programme, focused his project on procedural workflows for real-time content generation in virtual production (ICVFX).

He said:

The event was a great opportunity to showcase my work as well as celebrate the hard work of my fellow MSc students throughout the past year. There's lots of innovative and novel work coming out of Abertay so any chance to share it with the wider industry is greatly appreciated!

Maja OszczypaƂa presented a virtual production pole dancing video, created using the LED wall at the CoSTAR Realtime Lab.

She said:

It was great to take part in the showcase and see the work of all my friends displayed there. I am glad I had the opportunity to share my work and hear feedback from the general public and industry professionals.

The showcase offered a compelling glimpse into the future of digital innovation, with each project reflecting the ingenuity and ambition of the next generation of digital pioneers.
