Abertay gets ready for virtual winter graduation celebration

Almost 300 Abertay University students will enjoy a virtual celebration this evening to mark their graduation.

The University’s Winter Graduation is the second ceremony to be moved online after the coronavirus pandemic forced the postponement of the traditional ceremonies at Dundee’s Caird Hall.

Students from the University’s three academic schools – Design & Informatics, Applied Sciences and Business, Law and Social Science – will celebrate the occasion alongside students from Abertay’s Graduate School.

Connie Reid will graduate with a BA (Hons) in Game Design and Production.

The 25-year-old said: “My time at Abertay has been life-changing. I, alongside several other students, formed an independent games studio, Konglomerate Games, which focuses on creating healthcare games to improve lives.

“I also work for Pocket Sized Hands – a Dundee based games company which consists entirely of Abertay graduates.

“I wouldn’t be doing any of this if it were not for my time at the university. I’m have mixed feelings about graduating. I’m sad to be leaving Abertay, but I’m really excited about what’s to come next.”

Abertay Principal Professor Nigel Seaton said: “While this ceremony is rather different from our usual event in the Caird Hall, it reflects the same pride that we have in the accomplishments of our graduates.

“Many of them have made a direct contribution in the fight against COVID, whether it is has been through placements, research, volunteering, employment as a key worker or in some other way.

“Every student graduating has overcome challenging circumstances this year and they should all be very proud of what they have achieved.”
