Celebratory Pecha Kucha night to mark Abertay’s 25th anniversary

A cancer survivor-turned-campaigner, a podcasting guru and the Head Coach at Spartans FC Women are among a diverse line-up at a special night of quick-fire talks, celebrating Abertay University’s 25th anniversary.

High-profile graduates from Abertay, Dundee Institute of Technology and Dundee College of Technology will take part in the Bell Street and Beyond, powered by Pecha Kucha.

The free event, organised in collaboration with Creative Dundee, will see speakers share their stories through 20 images, each shown for no longer than 20 seconds.

Dr Julie Wardrop, a cancer survivor and founder and chairperson of CanDu Dundee Cancer Support Network will give a presentation.

Podcaster Colin Gray, who runs a successful company teaching people how to create podcasts of their own, will speak.

Spartans FC Women Head Coach Debbi McCulloch, who also works as the club’s Business and Operations Manager, is another well-known name on the bill.

She said: “I really enjoyed my time at Abertay, and it gave me the opportunity to push myself and learn skills that helped me get to where I am today.

“It’s been such an important part of my life, and I learned that if you study with the right people in the right environment you never know where you might end up.

“I’m absolutely delighted to be involved with Bell Street and Beyond and I’m excited to share my story as we celebrate the university’s 25th anniversary.”

Others who will take to the stage include author and professional travel blogger Kash Bhattacharya, world renowned nursing professor Laura Serrant and Cian Roche; Managing Director of games company Puny Astronaut.

Lori Anderson, Director of Creative Dundee said: “We are delighted to work with Abertay University on Bell Street and Beyond, celebrating 25 years of an institution that has been key not just to the creative industries in Dundee but also to its wider pool of talent and expertise.

“The event is powered by Pecha Kucha, borrowing on a format which Creative Dundee has made popular with Dundee audiences for the last eight years.

“This has been an excellent opportunity for us to continue amplifying unique talent in the city with insightful and entertaining presentations, while also showcasing some of the rich history of Abertay and its graduates." 

Bell Street and Beyond, powered by Pecha Kucha takes place from 6-9pm on Saturday 28 September at the Dundee Contemporary Arts Centre.
