An Abertay sports student is celebrating after being selected to umpire a prestigious European hockey tournament in Vienna.

Carly Edward, from Broughty Ferry, is to officiate matches at the Women’s EuroHockey Indoor Club Trophy, which runs over this weekend.

The fourth year Sport and Exercise Student, who one day hopes to umpire at an Olympic Games, says it’s a huge honour: “This is my first indoor tournament and although I’m nervous, I’m very excited.

“I want to go to Austria and get noticed. I want to show people what I’m capable of.

“At the moment there’s a shortage of female umpires in our sport and I want people to know that it is an option worth considering.

“I absolutely love what I do”
