Pedal power boosts Abertay student scholarships

The second Tour de Tay charity cycle event organised by Abertay University to help raise money for student scholarships was supported by over 150 determined cyclists on Saturday 24 September. Staff, students, graduates and friends of the University embarked on the 50-mile cycle route from the Tay Road Bridge to Perth and back. The sporting event in aid of Abertay's Expanding Horizons Fund helps finance scholarships for students to work and study abroad. The cyclists travelled out through Newburgh in Fife, then back through Errol and Dundee along the north bank of the Tay with teams from Abertay schools and services, NCR, Thorntons Solicitors, Thorntons Investments and Burnside Motors. Some unusual bikes took to the road on the day including husband and wife team, Pauline and Stuart McCormack on a tandem and Andrew Derrington on a vintage Moulton bike. Funds raised from the inaugural Tour de Tay event in 2015 funded a scholarship for Abertay Sports & Exercise Science student, Rosie Coull who said: 'I'm a self-supported student and rely solely on my student loan and part time job to finance my 4 years at Abertay. This scholarship provided me with an opportunity to study and train abroad at the University of North Florida. I was able to train in a different climate and improved physically and academically as a result of this fantastic experience. Every penny raised by Tour de Tay is helping people like me to further their university career and I would like to say a massive thankyou to everyone who supports Tour de Tay.' Carol Ann Smith, Head of Alumni & Development said: 'We are delighted that so many people turned up to cycle and are helping to raise money for the scholarship fund. It's all in aid of supporting our students to reach their full potential and provide transformational opportunities that without financial help would not be possible. Thank you to everyone who has participated today, our gold sponsors Thorntons Solicitors and Leisure & Culture Dundee and all the volunteers and marshals who have helped make today a safe and fun event.'
