MSP pledges her support for Dundee Academy of Sport
MSP pledges her support for Dundee Academy of Sport
MSP Jenny Marra yesterday took part in a unique summer football camp, organised by the Dundee Academy of Sport.
The summer camp is giving youth team players from both Dundee and Dundee United football clubs the chance to experience a week in the life of a professional footballer whilst encouraging them to continue their interest in sport through education.
The Dundee Academy of Sport, an innovative partnership between Abertay University and Dundee and Angus College, uses sport as a vehicle to encourage those who might otherwise not be attracted to further and higher education to consider continuing their studies, as well as helping to develop the workforce in the local sport and leisure industry.
Ms. Marra took part in a practical strength and conditioning session with the young players and then pledged her support for the Dundee Academy of Sport, calling for the project to be given greater assistance to continue its ground-breaking work.
Ms. Marra said: ‘The Dundee Academy of Sport does excellent work in encouraging young people to participate in sport. The benefits of sport to our young people are huge – health, confidence and opportunities. Dundee is a city that has sport at its heart and has produced tremendous sports stars, athletes and coaches. This project will help deliver lifelong participation in sport and education for our young people here in Dundee.’
Ian Lowe, Project Manager for Dundee Academy of Sport, said: ‘We are delighted that Jenny Marra has been able to take the time to come and see the practical impact of the work of the Dundee Academy of Sport.
‘This is a living example of Abertay University’s desire to reach out and work in partnership with a broad range of organisations on innovative programmes to encourage those who might otherwise not be attracted to further and higher education to consider continuing their studies.’
