International businesses mentor Abertay students

Global companies are mentoring students at Abertay University this week as part of the three-day Innovation for Global Growth event.  Innovation for Global Growth gives students the opportunity to develop solutions to real business challenges set by organisations from a range of business sectors including food-and-drink, banking, textiles and telecoms. Businesses involved this year include BT, Heineken and the Bank of Scotland. This year also sees the first time that non-Abertay students are involved.  Twenty postgraduate students from the University of St Andrews’ masters course in human resource management are joining one of the sessions at IGG. Working in small teams, the students have to apply their studies to practical problems currently being faced by these businesses before pitching their solution back to the company. The three days are focused on developing students’ entrepreneurial skills and giving them the opportunity to experience some of the challenges and pressures of a real working environment. Charlie Malone, event leader from Abertay University’s Dundee Business School, said: “Innovation for Global Growth has developed into a major annual event at Dundee Business School and this year we’ve opened it up to more students than ever before, giving undergraduates the chance to pitch ideas to major global companies. “We’re always looking at ways of making our teaching and learning practical and business-focussed. Facing the pressure of a commercial environment in a safe way is a very exciting experience for our students. “For the companies themselves, such as BT and Heineken, it lets them collect fresh new ideas for challenges they’re currently facing as well as showcasing our most promising graduates who will be the business leaders of the future.” The organisations setting challenges this year include The Sea Fish Company, Heineken, AJ Barr’s, BT, Bank of Scotland and Bonar Yarns.       (Ends)     For media enquiries, please contact Kevin Coe, Media and Communications Director, Abertay University,   E:  k.coe@abertay.ac.uk   T:  01382 308452    M:  07850 904110
