Global Game Jam takes over Abertay University

Global Game Jam takes over Abertay University

A 48-hour game jam will take over Abertay University this weekend, with around 200 students, lecturers, alumni and professionals collaborating to create brand new game prototypes. The Global Game Jam is an international event which challenges game developers to create games in response to a set theme to inspire their games.  This year’s event is thought to be the biggest of its kind in the world, with almost 21,000 people registered to take part at 636 separate locations across 93 countries. This is the fourth year that Abertay has hosted the Dundee venue for the Global Game Jam.  This year, there is a sister site at Dundee MakerSpace where a further 50 participants will gather. With a total of 250 participants, Dundee will be one of the largest locations in this year’s Global Game Jam. Each year’s Jam has a different theme, only announced at the start of the event.  In 2015 the theme was “What do we do now?”, and in 2014 the theme was ‘We don't see things as they are, we see them as we are’. Last year over 5000 new games were created in one weekend, with 518 locations hosting game jams in 78 different countries. The Global Game Jam is focused on encouraging collaboration and creativity and is not a competition. Ryan Locke, Abertay University lecturer in computer arts and GGJ Site Organiser for Dundee, said: “We are delighted to be hosting our 4th Global Game Jam event and very much looking forward to the fun, beautiful and often meaningful ideas our students produce during these intensive creative events.   “We’re also very happy to have many industry bodies and alumni take part, they play an important role in helping to guide and inspire new talent which is vital to the wider game making ecology of Dundee and Scotland. I wish participants in Dundee, Edinburgh and Glasgow – and the WORLD all the best this weekend!” The jam starts at 6pm on Friday 29 January and runs until 6pm on Sunday 31 January.
