‘Gaming and Digital Technology Weekend’ will be held at Dundee Science Centre on both Saturday 12, and Sunday 13 November. The event will see local games designers and digital experts showcase their high-tech expertise and innovations to families from 10am until 5pm.
Abertay students will hold a ‘games jam’ to develop a game live over the weekend. Visitors can contribute ideas and get an insight into the game development process. The students then hope to present a finished version of the game on Sunday.
In addition to this, Saturday will also see Abertay’s Division of Games and Arts showcasing demos of videogames, which will include a demonstration of Virtual Reality by a student team. Other student games on display will involve a range of topics, from Scotland’s role in the sugar trade to a game about British shark species. Raspberry Pi workshops will also run throughout the day with Dr Paul Robertson.
Dr Robin Sloan, a lecturer in Abertay's Division of Games and Arts, said: “For almost 20 years, students at Abertay University have been studying computer games development. Today we offer courses in design, technology, art, and sound & music for games, and our graduates work all over the world. This weekend, we hope to inspire the next generation to consider an education and career in game design.”
V&A Dundee will also be offering Virtual Reality tours of the waterfront development, and the inside of the V&A Museum of Design Dundee, and there will be lots of other activities and demonstrations over the course of the weekend.
Rebecca Erskine, Exhibition and Community Engagement Manager, Dundee Science Centre said: “With world-leading universities on our doorstep, and the V&A Museum of Design taking shape, Dundee Science Festival is the obvious event to celebrate all that is digital.
“This weekend is a rare occasion to get hands-on with some of the amazing and pioneering developments taking place around us, from games and apps under development to stunning, digital art.”
