Abertay appoints Morrison Construction for major refurbishment project

Abertay University has appointed Morrison Construction to carry out the major remodelling works planned for this summer for part of the Kydd Building, the University’s main teaching and research block.
The University is investing around £3 million in upgrade and refurbishment works in the north wing of the Kydd Building. Beginning next month (July), Morrison Construction will upgrade two existing laboratories on Level 5, carry out major refurbishments on Level 4, and make some alterations on Level 3.
The most visible part of the works will be a complete reconstruction of the southern façade of the north wing. The University has released an artist’s impression of how the new façade will echo and extend the distinctive Abertay campus style, as well as contributing to reducing the building’s environmental impact by improving its energy efficiency.

The spaces to be remodelled are currently occupied by Abertay’s School of Science, Engineering and Technology. The School will use the new facilities for its teaching and research activities across a range of courses in science and technology that require specialist laboratories.
The works will begin over the summer and continue until the end of the year, with the most disruptive phases scheduled for the summer vacation. They are the first phase of a major improvement of facilities at the University planned over the next few years.

Professor Carl Schaschke, Head of the School of Science, Engineering and Technology, said:
"This new suite of science laboratories is designed specifically for our Forensic Science, Biomedical Science and Food and Drink undergraduate and postgraduate degree courses, and will feature the latest technology for enhanced learning as well as study and social space.
"Significantly, the laboratories also include a food product development laboratory and consumer experience laboratory designed to support the Scottish food industry in both process and product development, as well as for the understanding of sensory perception of foods, which is critical to success of the food business. The laboratories will enhance our industry-informed teaching programmes and be a focal point for local, regional and national business and enterprise.”
