New ‘Digital Classroom’ facilities at Abertay

25 October 2016

Digital facilities large

This is an exciting time for Abertay as we invest in new ways of teaching and learning.

Initial priorities have included refurbishing the science laboratories with state-of-the-art equipment and learning technologies, and designing a brand new Collaborative Learning Suite on Level 3 of the Kydd Building. These exciting new ‘digital classrooms’ support active student learning in both formal and informal areas.

The Collaborative Learning Suite is currently being trialled with a group of academic volunteers and will be fully available for teaching from January. Equipped with new learning technology using a combination of Kramer Via Connect software and Top Tec Synergy furniture, the space is designed to create a flexible, active learning environment between a tutor and up to 35 students.

One of the many features of the wireless technology is making sharing and presenting information easier. With any laptop or internet-enabled mobile device, students can view, edit and comment on documents in real time. Research shows that students understand subjects better when learning in this type of environment, aiding the development of problem solving and critical thinking skills.

Ideally suited to students bringing their own devices, the setup works with any internet-enabled device including smartphones, tablets and laptops.

The room is also available to students out with formal teaching hours for collaborative study on group projects.

Teaching and Learning Enhancement will be running briefing sessions in the near future so keep an eye on @AbertayNetTLE or visit for regular updates.
