100,000 downloads for Abertay student game
Seek, a game created by Abertay University students, has achieved over 114,000 downloads for iPhone and iPad.
The game was originally developed last summer for Dare to be Digital, the international game design contest for students run annually by Abertay University.
Seek won the Dare to be Digital Artistic Achievement Award, sponsored by The Foundry, and went on to win this year’s British Academy Scotland New Talent Award for Best Game.
Seek is an experimental game where the player has to use a tablet as a ‘window to the world’ similar to virtual reality, but without using a headset. It was created by Five Pixels, a team made up of Ross Davies, Chris Dickson, Jess Hider, Vimarsh Raina and Amy Stevens.
Amy Stevens from Five Pixels said: “One of our biggest challenges was that Seek is so different from other mobile games. During development, we were advised to monetise through adverts or to make the controls more generic, but those ideas really went against the core design of the game.
“Taking part in Dare to be Digital was an amazing experience for us. Showing Seek at the Dare ProtoPlay games festival to such a large and diverse group of people really made us think twice about the target market for Seek and who could enjoy our games.
“We had really positive responses from kids and adults, with casual and serious gamers both finding something to enjoy.”
Seek was promoted by Apple as a Best New Game on the Apple App Store, a major achievement for any game development studio.
Jess Hider from the team added: “I think our commitment to creating a really beautiful, unique experience has helped grab Apple’s attention and lead to tens of thousands of players downloading our game all around the world.”
In Seek, players have to search for their friends on a forgotten island, using new skills that the friends give them to discover secrets about the land. Each friend reveals a new way of navigating the island, including sonar location and being able to see back into the past.
The Five Pixels team studied the following courses at Abertay University:
- BA (Hons) Computer Arts
- BSc (Hons) Computer Games Technology
