Meditation gaming explored at Abertay Digital Graduate Show

1 May 2015

Computer games and meditation have been brought together by a student at the upcoming Abertay Digital Graduate Show, which opens next Friday (8 May).

Amy Stevens has developed Presence, a game where exploration and losing yourself in a calm, serene world replaces any need to complete challenges or finish levels.

While studying Computer Arts at Abertay, Amy became fascinated by the potential to use gaming to create an experience like meditation.

She said: “I was interested in looking at how escapism could be used in an experience that's relaxing rather than exciting, but still part of a fun game.

“It is getting better, but there tends to be a fairly limited range of stories and emotions that games explore and I'd like to be a part of expanding that.

“While the complexity and challenge that a lot of games have is really fun, there are times when this can be a barrier to just escaping into the story or world, especially when you're feeling stressed and don't want any frustration. “

She added: “I'm trying to create a feeling that's similar to meditation, where focusing so much on the present moment makes worries and stresses drift away. I think there's a similarity between this feeling and the way a player gets immersed in a game, even if they might not recognise it.

“I think games have huge potential as an art form and we've only just scratched the surface of what's possible.

“With the medium's ability to transport the player to a different place, let them be a different person and let them experience things they would or could never do in real life, I think there's an ability to really connect with an audience and impart meaning to them.”

Amy is one of 170 students showing their final year projects in Abertay University’s main Kydd Building and the Hannah Maclure Centre art gallery, on the top floor of the Student Centre.

The opening times of the Abertay Digital Graduate Show are:
