New partnership launched to develop rugby within Dundee
Following on from the successful link between Grove Menzieshill and the Abertay University Hockey Club, another partnership has been announced as part of the Scottish Student Sport (SSS) Approved Community Club link - this time between Morgan Rugby and Abertay University.
SSS, the national co-ordinating body for college and university sport, has been running a pilot initiative in Tayside & Fife, which formalises and calibrates community sports club links with student clubs.
Every SSS Approved Community Club Partnership is unique in its own way, and is aimed at ensuring student sport and community sports clubs benefit from the partnership.
Community sports clubs need to evidence that they meet a minimum of three of the four criteria, one of which must be the offer of a discounted membership rate to students.
The other areas the award concerns itself with are: raising the standard of students’ sports experience by access to quality community club coaches, access to appropriate facilities to train and play on, and opportunities for students to coach within community club school and youth programmes.
The award will be initially for three years, with an annual review to ensure both parties are continuing to benefit from the link-up, with the aim of sustaining and progressing a partnership that will last for years to come.
Ali Bell - Sports Development Officer at Abertay University - said:
"It's really great to work with local clubs such a Morgan Rugby to help develop student sport as well as encourage the students to engage with sport within the community. The partnership will contribute to the development and sustainability of rugby at a university and a community level, with Abertay students benefitting from access to facilities and other resources at Morgan Rugby, and Morgan Rugby developing their team with the engagement of Abertay students.”
Josh Gabriel-Clarke from Morgan Rugby and Strength and Conditioning Coach at Scottish Rugby Union is also delighted with the partnership announcement and hopes it will build sustainability within the university club as well as help support Morgan Rugby in the running of their First XV.
