Abertay academic becomes Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy
Eddie Simpson, a Lecturer in Construction Management at Abertay University, has received national professional recognition as a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA).
SFHEA status recognises the achievements of staff who have had an influence on professional practice beyond their own teaching.
Early in his academic career Eddie worked as Adviser of Studies to improve student progression rates, publishing research on successful interventions in this area alongside maintaining his teaching role.
He has a particular interest in the applications of technology for learning and the use of simulations as a method of teaching and learning, seeking ways of including games and simulations within teaching practice as an integral part of enhancing the student learning experience.
Eddie’s current role as College Consortia Coordinator has involved using his knowledge of further education and taking a lead in strengthening links with colleges to the point of designing and implementing joint delivery undergraduate Honours programmes.
Eddie Simpson said: “My interest in teaching began when I became a competent military instructor, coming top of my military instructor course, inspiring me to consider this as a role for which I had capability as well as enthusiasm.
“This formative experience developed within me a set of professional values and beliefs as an educator that remains with me to this day.
“The professional attributes of self-motivation, passion for teaching and doing everything I can to help students succeed are fundamental to my teaching approach.”
Dr Alastair Robertson, Director of Teaching & Learning Enhancement, said: "I'm delighted Eddie's many years of commitment to excellence in higher education teaching are being recognised with this prestigious award.
“Eddie joins a growing number of Abertay University colleagues whose passion for teaching and learning has been acknowledged by the Higher Education Academy.
“His focus on improving student employability through simulated work-related learning and strengthening links between further and higher education are all critically important parts of our work.
“Eddie has also been nominated for the Student Led Teaching Awards at the university every year since they started, so it is terrific to have his professionalism recognised nationally through this achievement."
Senior Fellow status is mapped to the UK professional standard framework for teaching and learning support in higher education and in order to gain this recognition Eddie had to demonstrate professionalism across the three areas of 'Core Knowledge', 'Areas of Activity' and 'Professional Values'.
This was achieved through a portfolio submission to the HEA containing a reflective account of his practice and two case studies demonstrating leadership in teaching and learning.
