Graduation stories – gaining real business experience

29 July 2013

Toni Gardner took part in real-life business challenges while completing her BA (Hons) Marketing & Business degree – experiences she says helped her get a graduate job with MTC Media as an online marketing consultant.

We caught up with her after she graduated recently, to hear more about her story…

'Personal approach to teaching'

“I would champion Abertay to anyone and I constantly tell colleagues – and anyone who will listen – that Abertay is the best university to come to study . The size of the university and classes allow for a more intimate and personal approach to teaching. It also means you have more contact time with your lecturers and a better learning environment.

“My twin sister actually studied and graduated at Abertay before me. I attended her graduation ceremony and was so proud – it gave me a taste of what it would be like to come to Abertay.

“Abertay definitely took a chance on me and I’ll be forever grateful for that. I have grown so much since starting university in 2010, as a person and a professional, with the help from several members of staff, in particular Jason Turner.

“Abertay gave me the confidence and guidance to be everything that I can be. Through hard work, late nights and sheer determination I achieved something to be proud of at Abertay.”

From graduate to professional

“I decided early on that I wanted to work with a small business in Dundee where I can see my skills and knowledge being put to use early on, with responsibility from day one. That’s exactly what I now have with my graduate job.

“I gained hands-on experience through live projects I undertook as part of my modules at Abertay, as well as extra work experience through opportunities students were emailed with.

“I have had so many great experiences whilst studying at Abertay. I did a live pitch to a panel of judges for a Radio Tay project with the objective to increase the station’s listener numbers. I was the Project Manager and I loved every minute of it – that’s when I decided I wanted to do something similar when I graduated, which has actually became part of my graduate role.

“I will always look back on my time at Abertay very fondly and am still a member of the Marketing Society.

“I can see the Marketing & Business programme and Dundee Business School having so much potential in the future and I am so proud to say I’ve been a part of that.”
