Abertay University appoints Alastair Robertson as Director of Quality Enhancement

6 February 2013

Dr Alastair Robertson has been appointed to the post of Director of Quality Enhancement at Abertay University.
Dr Robertson will take up his new post in April, and will be joining the University from the Higher Education Academy (HEA), where he is currently Assistant Director Scotland and Head of Research and Policy.

His role includes responsibility for overseeing all aspects of the HEA’s work in Scotland and also leading the HEA’s UK-wide Policy, Research, Surveys and Education for Sustainable Development teams. He has initiated and led a range of national projects such as the HEA’s Student-led Teaching Awards, the sustainability institutional change programme ‘Green Academy’ and leading HEA’s support for the Scottish Higher Education Employability Forum.  His particular interests are in the areas of strategic change, graduate employability and national HE policy development.
Prior to joining the HEA in 2005, Alastair spent two years at QAA Scotland where he co-managed the then new Enhancement Themes. His background is in academic scientific research (inorganic solid state chemistry) where he gained an international reputation in his field, publishing over 30 papers in refereed journals and almost 10 years’ postdoctoral experience of management and delivery of a range of publicly and industrially funded multidisciplinary projects.
Professor Steve Olivier, Vice-Principal and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) of Abertay University, welcomed the appointment, saying: “We are delighted that we have been able to attract Dr Robertson. His expertise, experience and energy will contribute significantly towards the bold plans that we have to further enhance our provision to students. This is an important new position for the University, and we look forward to the impact he will undoubtedly have.”
Professor Craig Mahoney, Chief Executive of the Higher Education Academy (HEA) commented: “Alastair joined the HEA in October 2005 and has made a highly significant contribution to our work. Most notably, Alastair has helped to position the HEA as a key player in the Scottish higher education sector, establishing strong strategic links with the Scottish Funding Council, the Quality Assurance Agency Scotland, NUS Scotland, Universities Scotland and the ‘Student Participation in Quality Scotland’ initiative. Our strong presence in Scotland, working with universities and colleges to make learning and teaching a strategic priority, is the result of Alastair’s hard work and determination.
“We wish him every success and look forward to continuing to work with him in his new role.”
