Programme Overview

As businesses become increasingly data-driven, the threat of cyberattacks grows every day. In this environment, leaders must understand how to protect critical information and maintain organisational resilience.

Abertay University’s MBA with Cybersecurity combines advanced business management education with essential cybersecurity expertise. You’ll build a strong foundation in core areas such as finance, leadership in a changing environment, and strategic marketing, while also learning how to safeguard organisational data and manage cyber risk.

Through a managerial lens, you’ll explore how to evaluate and leverage information for business success. The programme culminates in a consultancy-style project, where you’ll design practical solutions to real-world cybersecurity challenges, preparing you to lead confidently in an era of digital risk.

With six starts per year, you can start your studies within weeks, unrestricted by the traditional academic year.  You will also study completely online and either full-time or part-time, with the flexibility to develop your career prospects, without taking an employment break.

Sustainable Business (HBA506)

The three pillars of sustainable business are social fairness, environmental protection and economic viability. While the last of these has always been a concern for organisations, the first two are rising in their prominence and, regardless of where your organisation is, they are ignored at your peril. This module will help you to understand aspects of all three pillars and to consider the strategies taken to improve key performance indicators in each area.

Budgeting & Financial Control (HBA510)

Within this module, you will learn how to critically analyse the accounting approaches that go towards the creation of financial accounts and budgeting. You will also develop the skills necessary to evaluate common financial control mechanisms and tools to help with financial decision making.

Business Analytics (HBA505)

This module will examine the strategic implications of using data in different areas of the business. You will look at new sources of information, such as social media, and how these can be used to gain a better understanding of our potential and current stakeholders, the business environment and your own organisation. You will also examine some of the challenges of data management such as laws protecting individual’s data and moving data between different legal jurisdictions. Additionally, you will explore some of the technological advances that are helping organisations to collect and interrogate data, such as artificial intelligence.

Business Research Methods (HEM510)

This module is designed to introduce you to research methods and statistical analysis. Theoretical, historical and statistical concepts are taught using both quantitative and qualitative techniques that allow you to put theory into practice and conduct an in-depth research project.

Strategy Management (HBA507)

To succeed in the future, managers must develop the resources and capabilities needed to gain and sustain advantage in competitive markets. The way in which organisations attempt to develop such competitive advantage constitutes the essence of their strategy. This module considers the impact of current and emerging economic, political, digital and cultural factors and the relationship between strategy, stakeholder expectations and organisational performance. The strategic implications of e-business and the resulting digital transformation is also discussed.

Fundamentals of Computing (HCS501)

This module introduces the core ideas of computer architecture and programming. You will build a mental model of the functioning of a typical computer system that can be used to reason about system (hardware/software) behaviour. You will explore fundamental programming constructs, using the Python scripting language. You will use a problem-based approach to develop skills fundamental to programming.

Leadership in a Changing Environment (HBA502)

This module equips you with an understanding of the complex nature of leading and managing people when implementing and evaluating change in organisations. The relationship between task, people and technology will be analysed in the context of organisational change. Factors that necessitate change and the main indicators of change are critically analysed. Different approaches to leadership are examined, as are alternative models of organisational change.

Cybersecurity (HCS507)

You will explore current cybersecurity challenges and how defensive and offensive techniques can be used to improve resilience to an attack or breach. You will explore various threat modelling techniques to understand a system's weak point and understand how solutions that bring together technology, people and policies can be used to improve defences.

Contemporary Issues in Marketing (HBA503)

This module enables you to gain an in-depth understanding of and critically evaluate contemporary issues in marketing, from a theoretical and practical perspective. Given the fast-changing nature of contemporary digital marketing practice and of the context in which it takes place, the module explores recent developments and emerging issues in the field to provide you with an up-to-date, evidence-based perspective on digital marketing and its broader societal implications.

Research Proposal (HCS511)

This is your opportunity to shape the project you will undertake in the capstone module. In the research methods module, you will have learnt different approaches to undertaking a research project and these will help guide you in your management investigation.

Management Investigation (HBA565/HBA555)

This is the capstone to the MBA programme. The focus of this capstone will be directly related to any pathway you have studied. Regardless of which MBA you have taken, what you are assured of is a project which will be directly related to an authentic business challenge, and you will be able to deepen your knowledge in the area you want to concentrate on.
