My teaching and research interests are in the field of fluid mechanics, hydraulics, risk assessment and management, and environmental management and modelling. I teach at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels and facilitate teaching and learning workshops for teaching practitioners.
At Abertay University, I teach Hydraulics, Fluid Mechanics, and Air Quality Management. Working with students brings me enormous joy, as I see many of them achieving their outcomes. The exciting part in working with students is seeing them recognise the journey they have made and the benefits they have acquired as a result.
I found, from my primary school days, that I enjoy and am quite good at teaching people to improve their understanding. I have also enjoyed very much narrating stories and investigating matters, from when I was in primary school. Therefore, it was an easy choice for me to become an academic who contributes to exciting future for learners, whilst at the same time learning from these learners. Other associated value of being an academic for me is the opportunity to influence people and broaden minds, as I do believe we are all capable of learning.
University education helps transform people by improving their skills, particularly in critical thinking. From my example, university education helped me to develop a long-lasting and invaluable network and gave me, at an early stage, the ability to be resilient and determination to succeed.
I have a broad remit in research and have supervised and worked on various topics across General Engineering. Currently, I am mainly working on ‘efficiency of hydraulic structures’ and ‘methodologies for improving air quality for receptors’, subjects that are close to our hearts in these days of seeking sustainable solutions to climate change issues that we face in the World.
I am very proud of how much I have contributed to the Dundee Community and the national and international landscapes, ranging from Board memberships and Primary School governorship to sitting on the Professional Standards Committee of my professional engineering institution. Furthermore, I am very proud of my part in transforming the lives of our engineering students since I joined Dundee College of Technology in 1988 (as it was known then) and how our graduates are now Directors and Managers of many top Scottish Civil Engineering companies.
