It made me reflect on the skills I can offer beyond my day job and the impact I can make on others outside of academia.

Dr Michelle Weldon-Johns, Senior Lecturer in Law and Programme Leader for the LLB (Scots) Law programme, dedicated her volunteering day to delivering an engaging lesson on debating at a local primary school.

Michelle was inspired to participate in the Staff Volunteering Day initiative after her passion for debating was reignited by her husband, who had been teaching the topic to his own primary school class.

She saw this as an opportunity to not only share her love for debating but also to inspire young minds. Her aim was to introduce children to the art of debate, fostering critical thinking skills that could potentially set them on a path to university and perhaps a future in law.

Michelle said:

I really enjoyed seeing the kids get involved in the experience. Their excitement and active involvement made the whole experience truly fulfilling.

She highlighted that while some of the children were initially shy, by the end of the lesson, every student was engaged and eager to participate. For Michelle, witnessing this transformation was incredibly rewarding, as it demonstrated the positive impact that such an initiative can have on young people’s confidence and enthusiasm for learning.

By stepping out of her academic role and into the classroom, Michelle was able to use her expertise in a new and meaningful way, making a lasting impression on the students and further strengthening the connection between the university and the local community.
