It was such a worthwhile project, and I think it was a truly valuable way to spend my staff volunteering day.Claire Gammie | Abertay University | Widening Access and College Liaison Officer
Widening Access and College Liaison Officer, Claire Gammie, dedicated her volunteering day to the Coldside Summer Activities for Families Project at the Hilltown Community Centre. This initiative, a collaboration between Dundee City Council’s English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) team and the Community Empowerment Team, aims to bring together families from diverse linguistic backgrounds to build local connections and foster a sense of community.
As part of her role, Claire helped set up the arts and crafts room and assisted pre-primary and primary-aged children with painting, colouring, and various craft activities.
The event was filled with a variety of engaging activities. In addition to the arts and crafts, children enjoyed a magician’s performance, interactive games, and musical instruments. Claire noted a special highlight was a visit from dental students at Dundee University, who presented an informative talk and video on oral health. The children were thrilled with the props used during the session, adding an extra layer of excitement.
Claire said:
It was super seeing the children actively engage in activities that they may not have the opportunity to do at home. The children were fantastic, painting with real gusto.
The parents also had a chance to participate, enjoying the opportunity to meet other families and practice their English-speaking skills. After a lively and enjoyable lunch, described by Claire as “chaotic but fun”, everyone pitched in to tidy up the space.
Claire added:
It was a day filled with joy and connection, showcasing the positive impact of such initiatives on both individuals and the wider community.
