I believe it’s important for Senior Management to be visibly engaged in volunteering initiativesAndrea Cameron | Abertay University | Dean of the Faculty of Social and Applied Sciences
Andrea Cameron, Dean of the Faculty of Social and Applied Sciences, spent her volunteering day at Dundee Dragons Wheelchair Sports Club (DDWSC) - a local charity committed to promoting inclusivity and accessibility in sport.
Andrea split her volunteering into two half-days, during which she supported DDWSC by shortlisting and interviewing candidates for the role of Club Coordinator.
Andrea said:
I think the Volunteering Day is a brilliant initiative, as it allows us time to support meaningful charity work. This initiative strengthens our ties with the community, helping us give back while also building valuable connections with local organisations, creating a supportive network that benefits everyone involved.
Andrea was motivated to take part in the Staff Volunteering Day initiative due to DDWSC’s mission to ensure that sport is inclusive and accessible to all. Andrea emphasised the charity's profound impact on the health and wellbeing of its members, highlighting the social benefits of the organisation’s work. Furthermore, the initiative provided her with the opportunity to utilise her professional skill set in support of the charity.
Whilst working with DDWSC, Andrea assisted in appointing a successful candidate who is now managing administrative tasks for the club, freeing up other staff to focus on coaching and engaging with members. For Andrea, the most rewarding aspect of her volunteering experience was using her skills developed in the workplace to help select the successful candidate.
