Bealltainn Bound

A full colour comic, the opening chapter of a future comedic fantasy series that tells a story of a run-of-the-mill shopkeeper who is suddenly thrust into the role of a hero, bound to save the world with the help of a self-absorbed prince and a cryptic shapeshifter. The world and story are heavily inspired by Scottish and Gaelic folk tales, history and aesthetics. The comic is available to read in printed format, alongside explanations of certain details and characters and where Scottish inspiration influenced it.

What motivated you to develop/create this project?

My initial inspiration was just a funny idea I had for an inciting incident - a 'chosen one' archetype being unexpectedly dethroned in favour of an average person - but when I began to incorporate Scottish inspirations, the project became a lot closer to my heart as it enabled me to research and explore parts of my culture I didn't know before. I want to share a story I'm passionate about, wrapped up in familiar trappings and presented in an exciting way.

What has been a highlight of your time at Abertay?

Getting to interact with people from other disciplines - I've mostly been surrounded by other 2D artists and graphic designers up until Abertay, but I've made friends who works in all sorts of medium and styles. It's been really inspiring!

What are your hopes and future ambitions for after graduation?

I hope to be able to continue working on things that excite me, and surrounding myself with people who want to do the same, no matter where I end up. I plan to continue developing my comic to completion!
