Synopsis
Bollywood films are well-known and easily identifiable, despite their content varying wildly. This project attempts to identify common elements in these films and use these to construct a narrative for a text-based game.
Removing visuals and audio from the game allowed me to explore if the story could still be identified as belonging to the Bollywood genre, and identify what messages might be present at the core of these films.
Adapting Indian Storytelling into Text Games
This project analysed popular and influential Indian media to identify common elements that make up these narratives, using those as guidelines to create a text game.
Motivation
I have always had an interest in Indian storytelling, and Bollywood in particular. Whenever I would mention this to people outside India though, they'd mostly remember the dramatic cuts, dances and songs. There's a lot of good and bad in these stories, and I wanted to have the chance to explore these in games; seeing what can be taken away, what is really essential, what are some of the messages audiences overlook and how this would be different from narratives in western games. I mostly just wanted a chance to make one last game on as niche and specific of a topic as I desired, giving me the chance to try a new engine, experiment and learn before I would enter the workforce.
