The Evolution of Indie

This project seeks to showcase the evolution of "indie" in the games industry, and how indie can be defined today. This is done through the design of an interactive exhibition which aims to explore the history of indie games, divided into three eras, and promote discussion on the state of modern indie.

What motivated you to develop/create this project?

I was fascinated by an article talking about media romanticisation and nostalgia, so I went down a researching rabbit hole. I've always been interested in history and how things evolve over time. "Indie" is such a nebulous term and no one can agree on a definition, so it has been exciting to explore its history in the games industry. I'm passionate about education and chose to present my research in an educational experience context to hopefully promote discussion about the current state of indie games.

What has been a highlight of your time at Abertay?

I have enjoyed getting the chance to work in multidisciplinary teams with producers, artists, designers, programmers and many others. I'm grateful for being pushed outside my comfort zone, as I learned about and experienced things I never would have otherwise.

What are your hopes and future ambitions for after graduation?

I hope to enter the games industry, before returning to university to earn a masters, and eventually find a position in higher education.
