Developing a D&D Virtual Tabletop Using Social Presence Predictors

Synopsis

This project intends to explore other forms of online communication by using predictors of social presence to inform development of a virtual tabletop for Dungeons & Dragons. It combines communication tools and gameplay tools into a 3D environment, with a focus on incorporating eye gaze into a video/audio call setup to help reduce crosstalk and confusion. The program was developed in Unreal 5.3 with the Agora SDK and was tested by multiple D&D groups who were asked to play a short module and then fill in a two-part questionnaire to measure social presence and gameplay experience.
