Asymmetrical Single Player Experiences

Asymmetry as a game design concept is usually found in multiplayer games, in which players compete against each other either individually or within teams. The asymmetry is created by the different mechanics, gameplay systems, objectives, etc. between competing players or teams. My project uses foundational gameplay mechanics and systems from shooter genres to explore the possibility of applying asymmetrical game design in a single player experience. Furthermore, the secondary aim is to explore if this asymmetry can be used to make the player play against themselves without immediately realising.

What motivated you to develop/create this project?

My primary motivation came from my childhood, when I would attempt to play competitive games by myself, such as chess, but I would always know what the "opponent's" next move would be. This spurred me to challenge myself to explore the possibility of playing against yourself in a conceptual game.

What has been a highlight of your time at Abertay?

The provided opportunities to learn, develop and improve my knowledge and skills.

What are your hopes and future ambitions for after graduation?

To either seek employment within the games industry (or elsewhere) or to pursue a masters at Abertay, depending on the outcome of my honours project.
