Synopsis
My vision for this project is to research and learn from other illustrative artists that I look up to so that I can learn how to create illustrations that emotionally connect with my viewers. I want to specifically study the works of artists such as Wlop, Kan Liu and Ross Tran; how they paint, how they go about planning a composition, and their storytelling using colours, composition and paint styles. I'll do this by making in-depth analyses on their works and create master studies on their artworks. I'll look at traditional artists such as John Singer Sargent, and I will also look at other sources of media such as games and movies, and see how they are able to connect with the player of viewer through their use of colour, lighting and composition. After studying these works, I want to create my own illustrations depicting a story about my own characters and the events and key moments that happened in their lives, leading up to where they are now.
What motivated you to develop/create this project?
I look at games such as Overwatch and watched loads of anime when I was younger, and I've always been inspired to come up with my own creative world filled with characters and settings I've come up with. This project is basically a culmination of concept art and ideas I have been working on since secondary school so it is personal to me. I'm not trying to create the best or most innovating story ever, but something I can look back at and feel proud of, and that I can continue to develop after university.
What has been a highlight of your time at Abertay?
Working within groups, especially during 3rd year for our professional projects. This was probably the first time I really enjoyed working with other people; our group got along great and we still keep in contact to this day. It's amazing how well I managed to fit in considering I was a last minute random addition to their already stacked team.
What are your hopes and future ambitions for after graduation?
Just to be able to get a career in something that I really enjoy, which of course first would be art but it might not be. I just want to live a comfortable life and create art and if creating art is what's going to be paying my bills then that's an added bonus.
