Game Mechanics and Storytelling

“Game Mechanics and Storytelling” is a 2021 Digital Graduate Show project by Jonathan Honey, a Games Design and Production student at Abertay University.

Synopsis

A story about change, growing up and fighting monsters with toys.

You play as a child, defending your blanket fort from waves of monsters coming from under your bed. To protect you, you have the toys from your toy box: A mighty teddy bear, a platoon of plastic soldiers, a mischievous rag doll and an unstoppable train set.

Battle through waves of monsters as the world around you shifts and changes on a whim. Things cannot stay the same. The night may be dark and full of monsters, but There Will be Dawn.

Game Mechanics and Storytelling

A tower defence game where a child defends their blanket fort from the monsters under their bed. A story with no words, told through mechanics and changing visuals.

Motivation

The strange new experiences that come with developing adulthood, and how a lot of them are utterly terrifying. That, and one night with a couple of friends who just suggested that we build a blanket fort in my living room. We all still have a little childishness, and that can't be suppressed.
