Bookworm

Synopsis

The project explores the relationship between interactivity and narrative in video games. Bookworm is a development of ideas towards creating an investigative "walking sim" where each clue the player might uncover is associated with a unique gameplay mechanic to make the plot more distinctive. Bookworm also explores the idea of player-authored stories - there is a variety of clues in the game, not all of which will be found by the player. So, the narrative the player constructs through their investigation will be a result of how they played the game, what information they found, and how they interpreted it.

What motivated you to develop/create this project?

A previous project for a third year module highlighted a number of areas of improvement. Also my own research into narrative design in games brought some exciting ideas to mind I wanted to explore.

What has been a highlight of your time at Abertay?

Being a part of the Tabletop society has been not only fun but a good place to try new games and even test a few of my own designs.

What are your hopes and future ambitions for after graduation?

I would be delighted to find a design role or an opportunity to develop my hard skills making games in the games industry, but failing that, I think I hope to still make games digital or otherwise as an independent.
