The Spirit of Lonely Places

My project takes you deep into the heart of a destructive human emotion - greed - and its terrible impact on the natural world. Set during the bison hunts of the mid-1800s, when animals were hunted to near-extinction, a lone hunter is possessed by a 'Wendigo', a First Nation spirit born of insatiable hunger and greed. This encounter has a devastating effect. Witness the physical manifestations of his inner bloodlust and greed in my 2.5D short film; hand-drawn in Procreate and animated using Adobe After Effects.

What motivated you to develop/create this project?

I wanted this project to highlight one of the main issues facing the world and that's our own greed. It's about the destruction and exploitation of natural resources for our own gain. This continues to be as as much of an issue today as it was back in the 1800s. Folklore has been used for generations as a way to help understand these dangers, and I wanted to showcase their power in a unique way.

What has been a highlight of your time at Abertay?

Personally, my highlight has been creating friendships with so many talented and like-minded individuals. Being able to bond over shared passions has been amazing. Professionally, I would say it's been all the opportunities the university has given me. Game jams, talks and even larger events such as the Dare Academy, which I had the honour of winning last year.

What are your hopes and future ambitions for after graduation?

My ambition has always been to continue showcasing my passions through my art. I've always wanted my work to be used as a means to show how important creativity is, and that without it, life would be that bit more dull!
