Designing Accessible User Interface Layouts for Dyslexic Audiences

Synopsis

Researching common problems for dyslexic audiences that affect reading comprehension and the ability to interact with digital interfaces. Issues reviewed are related to text size, colour, spacing, use of contrasting colours, and iconography. Research involves investigating how designers can cater to the diverse needs of dyslexic users. The purpose of this project is to raise awareness of methods that can be implemented to improve dyslexic accessibility in user interfaces. The ultimate goal is to invite reflection from creators and ensure that all types of content can be experienced by wider audiences.

What motivated you to develop/create this project?

Although I am not diagnosed with dyslexia myself, someone close to me is. This project acted as a means for me to research the condition so that I could understand how the life of someone I know can be experienced differently to myself. I am also an avid believer that video games should be for everyone, and as I have an interest in pursuing a career in UI/UX this felt like a method to combine these elements.

What has been a highlight of your time at Abertay?

Building a strong skill portfolio and meeting all of my friends.

What are your hopes and future ambitions for after graduation?

I wish to become a UI Designer to build interfaces with accessibility embedded into them.
