You are the new groundskeeper of Airgine Cemetery, a small and quiet place. Speak to the mourners who come to visit; learn about the lives of those whose graves you oversee and the effects they had on all those left behind. Through this ‘visual novel’ style vertical slice and interacting with the characters within, you will explore themes of grief and mourning. You will be challenged to consider the ways in which you perceive grief and those experiencing it, perhaps leaving with a new perspective and understanding.
Perhaps it’s somewhat underwhelming but this project actually started with a random work generator as I was struggling to find a project idea I could achieve, it spat out the words 'graveyard, broom' and from that things began rolling. From that, I began planning for a ‘Graveyard Life Sim’ in which you would look after and oversee a little graveyard, and visit the locals for resources etc, etc. However, the scope for that was far too large and I didn’t want to create the concept art and designs alone as those are things I have done before for other projects, rather I wanted to write narrative and learn simple game software’s like AGS and Ren’Py. Thus, I decided to create an Art Directors pitch that covers the wider game concept including aesthetics, research, ethics and industry, as well as a vertical slice which would demonstrate the main feature of the game concept: the character interaction.
After graduation I hope to see the industry improve. I dream of making games with an indie studio, creating passion projects that can be enjoyed by myself and many others, however achieving that realistically is unlikely (for now) but I believe that myself and the others I have met in my time here can help make an impact and steer the industry, at least a little, to be better and to continue to strive to be better.
