It's Not Fair

It's Not Fair is a runner/RPG/set of minigames that tell the story about a young boy terrified by a monster that chases him to a strange lodge in the woods. There, he finds different people who are struggling to face their own monsters and as he hears their stories, he gains a deeper understanding of his relationship with the monster chasing him. Based on research into healthy conversations about grief and bereavement, this project attempts to use game mechanics and narrative to provide an authentic look into the effects of grief.

What motivated you to develop/create this project?

After losing my mother in 2015, it was a tough road back to normal. It's not like I was looking for solace in games, and it sounds melodramatic to say, but I've never found a game that I've felt has accurately portrayed my understanding of grief. I thought if I based a design on actual practitioner research, I could make something that would be less of a personal story and more widely relatable. Death isn't fun, but the more people talk about their experiences and feel heard, the better it is for everyone.

What has been a highlight of your time at Abertay?

DES311 was great, no holds barred - just let yourself loose on a project and see what you can do.

What are your hopes and future ambitions for after graduation?

Get a job in the industry, maybe do another degree. I'll have to do more thinking when I'm not busy with my honours.
